PET DAMAGE
We love our pets but their bathroom habits can cause havoc on our lawns. Continued urination leaves our lawns with unwanted patches of dead, brown, yellowed, or withered grass. You can identify a pet damage spot by dead brown, yellowed grass surrounded by dark green, rapidly growing grass. Dogs are typically the culprits, however, cats peeing in the same place repeatedly can also kill your grass. Female dogs tend to do more damage as they have higher acidity urine.
How to Prevent or Fix Pet Damage
1. Apply water to the area after your pet has finished their business. Clean up feces as soon as possible and wash area with water. This helps to prevent a buildup of nitrogen in the soil, which in turn causes the brown spots.
2. To help prevent damage throughout your lawn, there are a few options. Designate a specific area in your yard and train your pet to use this spot. Taking your pet for a walk through the neighbourhood or to a dog park.
3. Ensure your pet is drinking enough water, as inadequate water intake can also lead to more concentrated nitrogen in their urine.
4. Remove the damaged grass by raking and removing the dead grass or if the spot is large with extensive damage scrape away top layer with a shovel.
5. Reseed the damaged area. Choose a grass seed that is appropriate for your yard. You will want to take into consideration whether this area is shady or sunny when choosing your seed. Follow the seeding and watering instructions as per the instructions on the bag we also recommend mixing some soil in with your seed for optimal growth
