FAIRY RING

Fairy Ring is one of the most common diseases that a person will notice in their lawn. Fairy Ring is caused by soil inhibiting fungi that survive on dead organic matter. They can occur on any type of turf where conditions are suitable for fungal growth.

Fertilization with nitrogen to increase the growth and color of the surrounding grass will help mask the dark green grass surrounding the Fairy Ring. One of the easiest solutions to this problem is to pinch holes 4 – 6 inches deep, every 2 – 3 inches all over the infected area with a garden fork. Follow this by mixing 1 cup of dish soap per gallon of water and pouring the solution over the entire area. Follow with heavy watering until the area is easily penetrated with the garden fork. Do this for a 3 – 4 week period. Results will vary.

Another method is to dig them out. Dig 2 feet beyond the ring, square it off, remove the sod, and then the soil within the square to a depth of 12 inches. Fill the hole with new top soil, and reseed, or sod. Fairy Ring will increase it’s size annually. Once it comes in contact with soil, such as a flower bed, it will stop.

The final option is to fumigate the area. This should only be done by licensed professionals. Fumigation or digging them out is the only true way to eliminate the problem of Fairy Ring in your lawn.
